Why Antioxidants Are Important For Anti-Aging

Have you ever heard of the saying "Antioxidants are really like little bodyguards inside your body that protect your cells from disease." - Cynthia Sass ??? Well, it's basically true!


Now, I need to give you a disclaimer (one you already know, but just to be extra clear....) I am NOT a doctor NOR scientist. I am just a mom who loves to research things that interest me. And helping other moms like me look & feel their best at every age so that they can SHINE their light bright; is what I am passionate about!


I did write a book called "Healthy Beauty from the Inside Out" & it is all about the 10 Healthy Beauty Habits I discovered on my journey to looking & feeling MY best after lots of truama. I am still on this journey and still discovering fascinating things that I will keep sharing with you.


One of these fascinating things is ANTIOXIDANTS!


Now, I don't always eat blueberries, but for some reason, when I think of this word, I picture blueberries. How about you? When you hear the word "ANTIOXIDANTS", what picture pops up in your mind? (feel free to comment below because I would love to know!)


Recently I came across skincare serums that are ONLY made from plants. Nothing else. They are organic, wild-harvested, wild-crafted botanicals that are hand-gathered and processed by indigenous peoples using ancient artisanal methods. SO COOL RIGHT? But, the COOLEST part about these serums is that they are rated almost 30 million units on the ORAC scale.

WHAT IS THE ORAC SCALE?

ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) measures the antioxidant activity of various foods & cosmetics. The higher the ORAC value, the greater the antioxidant activity.


But, WHY are ANTIOXIDANTS so important? How do they work?


The best way I can explain it is like this...


We all know that free radicals are bad right? Free Radicals are basically things like: Environmental pollution, Cigarette smoke, Radiation, Drugs and pesticides, etc.


Scientifically speaking, they are molecules taking electrons away from the healthy cells. Basically, free radicals are like the SCHOOL BULLY stealing everyone's lunch money "electrons".


When free radicals overpower our body, it triggers oxidative stress & therefore impacts the different layers of the skin. This damage presents as fine lines and wrinkles, a dull, uneven skin tone, an increase in dark spots, and sagging skin. Simply put – the typical signs of aging.


ANTIOXIDANTS are just that: ANTI - OXIDATIVE STRESS. They neutralize the free radicals by adding electrons . I think of them as OPRAH coming in like "You get an electron & you get an electron"... Turning those broken down, sad cells into happy, healthy cells!


All that to say this... You want skincare (& haircare & your daily diet for that matter) high in antioxidants! And certain PLANTS (that haven't been given pesticides) produce a ton of antioxidants.
